WELCOME TO FEBRUARY ON BUROIt’s a different kind of Valentine’s over here
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and this year, with less schmaltz and over-commercialised crap, it’ll surely be the best one yet? No foil balloons, no social media showboating, inappropriate office jokes or the feeling that if you’re single, you’ve somehow failed.
Our stories this month are not so much a rebuttal of conventional Valentine’s Day sentiment, but a celebration of love in all its forms – something that Pandora Sykes’ round-up of books runs the gamut of. We also asked some of our favourite writers to take inventory of the non-romantic love in their lives. For author Olivia Sudjic, it’s her Granny Su (no e), whose sartorial punch and familial compassion is an example to us all, and for columnist Sophie Beresiner, it’s her best pal Pete. Meanwhile as part of our lessons in heartbreak series, Camille Charrière, Candice Brathwaite, Megan Nolan and Chante Joseph share the agony and ecstasy of previous relationships, and how pain inspired powerful reckonings.
Onto more practical affairs. If you’re alone for the evening, the week, or indeed, this entire lockdown, heed Laura Jackson’s advice and #makeamealofit for one. Though if you’re dining à deux, we’ve got suggestions for that, too, in addition to a definitely not clichéd playlist to accompany your evening.
You have to feel sorry for Valentine’s Day, really. No one actually likes it. Despite doing victory laps, couples spend their day in a heightened state of romantic anxiety. Singletons feel mercilessly victimised. And hot on its heels and enjoyed more freely, is Galentine’s, which, you may wince at for its 'GRL Power' semantics, but the sentiment is pretty great. Female friendships are not just a side dish to grand proposals and romance, they are the main event; the roast dinner with all the trimmings. So why not celebrate your most precious friendships by putting a ring – or a necklace, or a bracelet – on it, as per the dazzling edit below?
