By now, you should have mastered the art of working from home productively. In an ideal world, this would be done on workation. But, unless you’re an influencer insistent on being in Dubai, that’s not currently feasible. And so you’re working from home home, trying to decide whether you subscribe to comfort dressing or power dressing as a method of procrastination before resuming whatever it is that you’re supposed to be doing.

At some point, however, you will have to learn how to switch off when working from home. Not permanently, of course. But just for long enough to remind yourself that there’s a life outside of work. Our chosen tactics are as follows:

LEAVE THE ‘OFFICE’

WALKING BY ERLING KAGGE, £8.99 AT WATERSTONES

If things were ‘normal’ and you were not in fact working from home but from an office, leaving said office would be the first step towards switching off. In these ‘unprecedented times’, it’s no different. Perhaps you’ll use this as an excuse to browse your local supermarket’s reduced section. Or maybe you’ll just wander the streets aimlessly. Don’t stray too far, though. You have business to attend to at home.

MAKE YOURSELF UNAVAILABLE

YOGARISE ON DEMAND, FROM £12.99 PER MONTH

That business could be any number of things, but the best sort of business will be something that renders you completely unavailable like doing exercise. Since rendering yourself completely unavailable is a useful skill to have in general, we recommend Yogarise On Demand. Why be chained to specific Zoom class times when you can just do the yoga class you want when you want?

HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO

DABBA DROP SET MEAL FOR TWO, FROM £30

Often, the thought of dinner is all that gets us through the last hours of the working day. DabbaDrop is a sustainable delivery service of vegan curries and sides with a set menu that changes weekly. The food is delivered in reusable containers that are swapped with fresh ones on your next order. Now that’s something to look forward to.

TAKE THE EDGE OFF

STANDARD DOSE TINCTURE, £88

Sometimes we need further assistance in switching off when working from home than what simply leaving the house or eating dinner allows. For Anthony Saniger, founder of Standard Dose, an online curation of plant-based wellness products, “the act of taking a few drops of CBD oil under the tongue can help ease the body and mind, while working as a physical signal that it’s time to transition away from work.” And it can also be used in anticipation of a stressful day. Peace at last.

LOVE YOURSELF

WOMANIZER LIBERTY BY LILY ALLEN, £89

There really would be nothing more inappropriate than masturbating at work, so engaging in such an activity is a dependable way of switching off when working from home. We’ll leave you to it.
