The Drop: SQUARE TOE SHOES

Our square toe edit is window shopping for the soul. Or real shopping for yourself, of course. No one is looking.

Just when you thought that fashion was done with rebirthing all things 90s there’s a new shoe shape on the block. Its bluntness is a breath of fresh air. Time to give your pointy kitten heels some well-earned time off and invest in a square-toe replacement, because being blunt is the tone of the season.

The joy of this newcomer is there is no set style you need to look too to be able to get involved. Fan of the barely-there sandal, Bottega has you covered. Love a mule? Wandler and By Far have that perfected. More of a boot girl? It’s all good -Balenciaga has switched it, elongating raver point sling backs for completely box square. Oh, and Jil Sander has the perfect flat.

So really the lesson for this season is: if it’s not square, we don’t care.

STYLING TIPs

  1. Pair some strappy Bottega heels with a tailored short suit and silk blouse for the office and switch the tailored shorts for denim ones and the blazer for an oversized bomber come the weekend.
  2. Boots can take you from chillier times all the way through to spring and summer. Wear with long trousers so just the square peeks out and throw on a chunky knit for the ultimate throw-on look. For summer, switch into a loose oversized tent dress and belt with a standout buckle to add shape. For some serious 90s nostalgia, put on a slip dress and blazer.
  3. If you’re yet to be convinced by all this boxy-ness then dip a toe in with a pair that features a gently rounded foot-bed, like By Far’s sock boots or The Row’s minimal loafers. The great thing about this shape is going flat looks just as cool, so we can all rejoice in a season of comfort.
