Black ankle boots! What did we do to deserve them? Not a lot probably, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enjoy them along with all the other pleasures that life can afford. Since our need to actually wear black ankle boots - or indeed any sort of outdoor shoe - has decreased slightly in recent times, we’ll have to celebrate them as a purely visual feast for the moment.
Back when black ankle boots were celebrated for what they do, rather than just what they looked like, we praised how elevated they made everything. As lacklustre as you might have felt beforehand, a pair of black ankle boots had the power to transform you into a beacon of chic understatement. The fact we’ve just conceded to use the term ‘beacon of chic understatement’ to describe them is testament to their might - few other pieces of clothing would have us stumbling into such hyperbole.
