Just after Christmas Jonathan Anderson teased a picture of Studio Ghibli character Totoro, with a grass leaf on his head alongside the hashtag #LOEWEtotoro. As the collection drops at Selfridges, here's everything you need to know.
My Neighbour Totoro was released in 1988 in Japan and has since become a classic, loved by many the world over. The creative director of Loewe, Jonathan Anderson is also, and unsurprisingly a fan. “There is a natural longing for heart-warming feelings right now. We are all worn out and in need of something sweet and fulfilling”, explained the designer. “When I think of a movie that affords me that kind of solace, speaking directly to a child as it does an adult, that movie is My Neighbor Totoro”.
The capsule is all about comfort clothing and leisure wear. Think, logo t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, XXL shirts, leather jackets and loose linen shorts. And of course, all items feature Totoro, his friends the dust bunnies, and his magic tree home. Other highlights? All Loewe bestsellers – the Puzzle, the Heel, the Hammock, the Balloon and the raffia basket bags – have been redesigned for the occasion in soothing pastel colours to play host to Totoro and his forest friends.
Loewe is synonymous with craftsmanship and artistry, and the same goes for Studio Ghibli. For the capsule collection, the Spanish house’s artisans used a special leather marquetry, and worked with only the finest responsibly made leather and organic cotton. "The connection between Loewe and Studio Ghibli is this mutual love of craft and artisanal techniques. The connection between Loewe and My Neighbor Totoro, on the other hand, is the mutual connection with nature", says Jonathan Anderson.
The collection is already available exclusively at Selfridges and other selected stores worldwide, with prices starting from £95 for small leather goods. You can also shop it online on Loewe.com.
