Digital film festivals, music videos, shows staged in an actual desert. More and more brands are forgoing the traditional runway. It pays to do things differently - as recent data suggests, these new ‘off-schedule’ formats gain more buzz (social media analytics platform, ListenFirst,  Saint Laurent show held in a mysterious desert for spring 2021 became the most-viewed fashion show on YouTube last season).

In the days BC (before Covid) the AW21 fashion season would officially be over now. Though, seeing as a global pandemic has effectively dishevelled all concept of time and “schedule”, it makes sense that designers are looking outside of the box. Gucci, for example, has just announced their next runway show, Aria, will be presented next month on April 15th. Alessandro Michele will present his vision for the fashion house via a short film, marking the Italian fashion house’s 100-year anniversary this year.

Presenting shows “off-schedule” appears to be the new normal (also see: Bottega Veneta, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Versace, Kenzo, Off-White, Celine and Valentino). When IRL shows have become increasingly difficult to plan for, due to a year of fluctuating social restrictions, exploring different experiential streams is marginally more of an attractive strategy. In September, Balenciaga recreated an 1980s music video (Corey Hart's Sunglasses at Night). In December the brand then presented a video game Afterworld: the Age of Tomorrow, where all the characters modelled the AW21 collection (if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s available here.)

“I will abandon the worn-out ritual of seasonalities and shows to regain a new cadence, closer to my expressive call,” Gucci's Michele said in a statement last summer . “We will meet just twice a year, to share the chapters of a new story. Irregular, joyful and absolutely free chapters, which will be written blending rules and genres, feeding on new spaces, linguistic codes and communication platforms.”
