As 2021 is merely seconds apart from 2020, it’s hardly surprising that nothing – nothing at all – has changed with regards to that godawful global pandemic upon entering a new year. And with a more expansive national lockdown just announced, perhaps things have even got worse. But just because 2021 is imperfect now, that’s not to say it can’t improve. We shall simply have to take baby steps as opposed to big strides. Besides, at least there’s more time to ascertain exactly which of these flared jeans you want (among other things).

THE DENIM FLARE

RE/DONE DENIM FLARED JEANS, £531 AT FARFETCH

A denim flare is the flared jean in its purest form. While ‘jeans and a nice top’ has many joyful iterations, the denim flare is probably its most stable component. And who can be surprised when they’re so universally flattering?

THE ACID WASH FLARE

ECKHAUS LATTA ACID WASH FLARED JEANS, £300 AT BROWNS

We all worship at the altar of universally flattering jeans, but not all of us want to be seen doing so. Regrettably, it’s not always cool to care. The solution? Acid wash flares. Surely anyone willing to wear acid wash wouldn’t care about whether their jeans were flattering or not, right? Wrong. Although if you’re intent on being deceptive, you might as well do it in Eckhaus Latta.

THE WHITE FLARE

PACO RABANNE HIGH-RISE KICK-FLARE JEANS, £440 AT MATCHESFASHION

If you thought acid wash flares demonstrated some degree of risk, white flares will have you raising legitimate health and safety concerns. But it’s the danger of ruin that makes them so sexy! And managing to keep a pair of these pristine would be an achievement in itself.

THE BLACK VELVET FLARE

PAIGE GENEVIEVE BLACK FLARED STRETCH-VELVET JEANS, £260 AT HARVEY NICHOLS

Flared jeans? Velvet trousers ? Flared jeans? Velvet trousers? Both, actually. And being black, this pair from Paige are even more indispensable.

THE PINSTRIPE FLARE

ACNE STUDIOS 1990 FLARED PINSTRIPE JEANS, £280 AT LIBERTY

After endless months of WFH, workwear isn’t that much of a thing anymore. But sometimes we still pine for it. And then realise we don’t actually miss it. We wouldn’t deny ourselves these pinstripe flared jeans from Acne Studios, however.

THE UNCONVENTIONAL FLARE

AGOLDE CRISS CROSS FLARED JEANS, £240 AT HARRODS

For some of us, white flares are not nearly daring enough – we want them to have an unconventional edge too. That's exactly where this pair by Agolde comes in.

THE CROPPED FLARE

ARKET FLARED CROPPED JEANS, £59

A cropped flare – as well as being a wardrobe essential – is the flare for anyone more concerned with displaying their shoes than the flare itself.

THE FLORAL FLARE

R13 KICK FIT CROPPED FLORAL-PRINT HIGH-RISE FLARED JEANS, £435 AT NET-A-PORTER

With all this talk about flared jeans being 'sexy', 'daring' and 'flattering', it might seem as though they don't leave much room for fun – wrong. Just look at this pair!
