When it comes to spotting fashion’s next big thing, Rihanna’s your girl. Miss Fenty - who won the newly established Urban Luxe category at the Fashion Awards this year - has been an early adopter of young British talent. Often repping new gen brands on her Instagram, from Molly Goddard to Marques'Almeida, before hitting the mainstream.
It seems fitting, then, that RiRi’s first Fenty fashion collaboration is with up-and-coming label ASAI. The London-born designer behind the brand, A Sai Ta, whose young label ASAI sits at the heart of the city's visual identity, has interpreted the FENTY floral printed jersey dress and long-sleeved top in a limited-edition collection of 24 pieces, available exclusively at Selfridges London from today (December 11th).
“The customised pieces are intricately executed in the style of ASAI’s cult ‘Hot Wok’ design,” according to a statement. “This collection celebrates some of the two labels' shared codes: freedom, and a distinct sense of community.”
The British-Chinese-Vietnamese talent often draws on his mixed heritage. “Growing up, I moved through so many different subcultures and friendship groups,” he said in an interview this year. “I naturally just became this hybrid of different things.”
Since the CSM alumni burst on the scene two years ago - launching with talent incubator Fashion East in 2017 - ASAI’s signature kaleidoscopic tie-dye garms, curve-hugging dresses and grungy 90s aesthetic has garnered a cult following. The Hot Wok tops, in particular, were on many a fashion editor’s shopping list in 2019.
Next season's Fashion Week street style watch? We predict a Fenty x ASAI frenzy.
