January: you really are the Monday of months. Thankfully, the awards season merry-go-round serves up some grade A escapism; wherein our actual Monday mornings are usually dedicated to obsessing over celebrities swathed in million dollar diamonds (hi, J.Lo), backstage magic (two words: Brad and Jen), the best acceptance speeches (one word: Brad) and weighing in on the “what-is-she-wearing?” talking-point gowns (something that was in no short supply at the Golden Globes, with fashions that sparked a mixed assortment of reactions over WhatsApp).

A shift from the more avant-garde, puffy-sleeved, OTT optical prints parade we have seen on the red carpet of late, the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards last night showcased a return to classic old Hollywood style.

Leading the ladylike trend with Grace Kelly-like poise was Zoë Kravitz; the Big Little Lies actress wore a peach-coloured, bow-adorned Oscar de la Renta gown, completing her look with white opera gloves. An internet scan proves the vintage accessory has enjoyed a slow but steady revival; thanks to Beyoncé’s sheer black style she wore to the Golden Globes and runway appreciation for AW19 from the likes of Balmain, Max Mara and Ralph Lauren. There was more demure drapery by way of Jennifer Lopez’s off-the-shoulder black gown by Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika (styled with Harry Winston diamonds, worth a cool $9 million) and luxurious Lana Turner-esque satin looks from Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Aniston. In fact, the star of The Morning Show opted for a white, vintage Christian Dior by John Galliano gown for the night - the move to repping pre-loved garms increasingly becoming more popular on the red carpet.

It wasn’t just about the dresses, though, with a nod to retro beauty looks. "I was definitely channeling the 1940s today," hair maestro Vernon François said of creating Lupita Nyong'o's style for the night. "You don't often get to see women that look like Lupita or have similar hair textures — like the curly-kinky-coily hair textures — do something so glam and old Hollywood on the red carpet." Elsewhere, Michelle Williams opted for chic side-parted style, pulled back with a diamond hair brooch (this year’s Prada headband? Watch. This. Space.)
