To celebrate Chinese New Year, Gucci has teamed up with Disney to create a capsule collection of Mickey Mouse adorned garments and accessories. 2020 is the year of the mouse (or rat, depending on the translation), so naturally Gucci have selected the world’s most iconic rodent - Mickey Mouse - to mark the start of Chinese New Year on January 25th.

First thing to know is that the collection is big. Huge in fact. Not only will there be ready-to-wear, footwear and general accessories (leather goods, jewellery, watches), there’s an array of other totally unnecessary-but-absolutely-necessary bits - a guitar case and a hat box, for example. Don’t play guitar you say? Then learn. Not really a hat person? Well, change!

In recent collections, creative director Alessandro Michele has often made reference to the brand’s designs in previous decades and this capsule is no exception. Paying homage to Gucci’s classic eighties aesthetic, Michele introduces a Mickey-makeover to the Mini GG Supreme canvas. The signature beige and ebony fabric with the iconic monogram has been reproduced with digital printed motifs of the mouse in varying sizes. Adding to this, a selection of knitwear, shirts and T-shirts decorated with jacquard prints of the Disney mascot will also be available - we already have our eyes on the Princetown loafers and the Supreme GG canvas mackintosh.

The campaign features Gucci ambassador and actress Ni Ni, and was shot by director Harmony Korine, who also collaborated with the brand for its Art Basel Miami sunglasses. It’s also not the first time that Disney and Gucci have joined forces, in fact the Disney mascot made an appearance in spring/summer 2019 as well as resort 2020, apparently this is a mouse with excellent taste.

Dropping tomorrow (Friday 3rd January), the capsule will be available in selected Gucci stores and online, as well as a selection being available on MATCHESFASHION.com. Disney fanatics - set your alarms.
