2020 has already been a big year for Frank Ocean. Only 9 days in and not only has it been announced he will headline Coachella, he is also the new face of Prada. Shot by David Sims for the spring/summer 2020 menswear campaign, the short video and images released see Ocean wearing a black overcoat, camel pants and shirt, with a bolo tie.
The new campaign, which also features Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor Austin Butler and Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, plays on the inability to define the idea of Prada and its core identity. The brand’s logo has been reworked to offer three acronyms for ‘Prada’ - ‘Programming Rhythms And Dancing Again’ being Ocean’s. According to the press release, this playful manipulation of the title stems from ‘abstract ideas, thoughts and notions.’ We know, it’s so poetic.
It’s also not the first time Ocean has found himself at the centre of Prada hype - at last year’s Met Gala in May he wore a Prada quarter-zip hoodie with a simple white shirt and tie for the Camp:Notes on Fashion theme. Many jokingly mistook him for the valet, despite being decked out in the luxury label. The irony, Prada, Frank - we appreciate it all.
