In between being a professional party starter, David Guetta is enjoying a brief moment of calm before the chaos. Currently the French DJ is in Dubai, before being whisked off to Saudi Arabia to perform at MDL Beast festival (joined by some of the world’s greatest international DJs, from Steven Aoki to Martin Garrix). So far, so normal for the perma-traveller. For Guetta, playing music for thousands of partygoers around the world is an “emotional experience”. Much like festivals, New Year’s Eve falls into the EE category: some good, some bad, some truly ugly. So, we quizzed the superstar DJ on his go-to places to stay to party (and recovery) destinations to ring in the roaring twenties.

WHERE TO PARTY

New York City. It's the best place for music. DJs love to do perform for people who love music and people there are open-minded. Not only because I like the party vibe there but it’s also the place itself - it’s one of the most iconic in the world. It feels very inclusive; it has a real global energy. If there was a last day on the planet I would like to be in New York. I had an amazing New Year’s Eve party playing underground techno a warehouse in Brooklyn many years ago.

WHERE TO STAY

The Mercer 100 percent. It’s in the middle of Soho; very cool, quality [and] beautiful. I love it!

WHAT TO DRINK

My drink of choice? I’m really old-school so it's vodka tonics.

WHERE TO RECOVER

I seriously love Aman resorts. The concept is to be really close to nature; it’s very minimal design, but luxury. My two favourites are Amanpulo in the Philippines – it’s very calm. The other one is Amangiri in Utah, it’s in the mountains and near lakes. It’s more of a spiritual experience; lots of mediation and walking in the mountains. When you're there, nature is your TV.

DON’T WANT TO GO TO A CLUB? DO IT YOURSELF

One of my all-time favourite New Year’s Eve memories was when I was an 18-year-old student. It was a real success. I rented out a space in Paris, invited all my friends from uni, brought a big sound system, and printed off loads of posters to advertise it. That was the beginning of my career.

David Guetta is performing at MDL beast festival from 19th-21st December, for futher information head to mdlbeast.com
