Even those who proudly give the ‘romance’ genre a wide berth on Netflix love this movie. Think Romeo and Juliet meets Bonnie and Clyde, but on acid. Every scene is a loud and lurid trip. In grandiose Quentin Tarantino fashion (he wrote the script) there’s murder, drugs, action, some odd-but-brilliant cameos (i.e. Brad Pitt as a stoner). But at its heart - as the title of the cult 90s film would suggest - it’s an ode to good, old fashioned, I’ve Just Met You But Feel Like I’ve Known You All My Life, romance. The protagonists – fervent Elvis fan Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) and Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) who's been a call girl for “exactly 4 days” when they meet – are enduringly charming. They profess their love for each other almost instantly. Rather skilfully, you’re never given enough room to really question whether this is naïve. Craving a wild road trip (the film offers getaway style inspiration aplenty, via His ‘n’ Hers kitschy aesthetic and the pièce de résistance for the lovers-on-the-run… a purple Cadillac)? Found yourself in pandemic-induced whirlwind cohabitation? This film will speak volumes. And, for those still searching for that person? A cool reminder that they’ll often be found when you least expect it. Stream here
