This is not a lecture about the importance of wearing SPF on your face. You know that already. After all, you’re a grown human with grown human problems. How do I bleed a radiator? Should I get a cash or stocks and shares ISA? Where is that smell coming from? Who even am I? And, most pressingly, how do I reapply SPF without ruining the makeup I have on that took several YouTube tutorials to master? Well, with an SPF face spray that you can apply over makeup, obviously. Here are the best.
Conventional SPF isn’t the only threat to your makeup during the height of summer, however: the heat is also an issue. One way to stop your makeup melting is to use the COOLA Makeup Setting Spray. That’s not its only function, though. It also offers SPF 30 to protect your face from harmful UVA and UVB rays. On these factors alone, it’s a doubly excellent product, but the following additions make it even better: hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate skin; cucumber and aloe vera extracts to soothe and refresh; green tea extract, phoenix leaf, peony leaf and juniper berry stem cells to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. It’s a summer essential really.
Where usually – after layering all your morning skincare products correctly – there should be a wait between the application of SPF and the beginnings of a full face, the Kate Somerville UncompliKated SPF 50 Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray allows you to reverse this process, eliminate the wait and set aforementioned full face in a single misting. A single misting that delivers a finish so matte that you look filtered, to be exact.
There’s more to Pixi Sun Mist than the fact that it sounds nice. It also looks nice, for one, and it offers a mist so sheer that you won’t have to reapply your base (and heaven knows what else) for the privilege of having SPF 30 on your face. Plus, it has a caring side too: extracts of bamboo and chamomile to soothe and gently moisturise.
Given that it contains raspberry, cranberry, strawberry, blueberry and pomegranate seed oils blended with winged kelp, it would be easy to write off the Oskia SPF Vitamin Mist – which also smells like coconut – as a fanciful smoothie fit for ingestion and not much else. But that would be wildly incorrect. The plethora of fruit oils and the winged kelp aren’t there to be ingested, they’re there to reduce redness and nourish the skin topically. And, as well as free radicals being frightened to death, an SPF of 30 prevents sun damage. Maybe you can have it all.
The summer we deserve involves dancing to the point of exhaustion in broad daylight. We all know what that means, though: sweat. Miraculously, however, the Shiseido Sports Invisible Protective Mist strengthens as it comes into contact with sweat. And – as the name would suggest – it’s invisible despite having an SPF of 50. Here’s to sweating profusely and still looking fabulous.
