To me - a matte makeup devotee - modern gloss is about embracing the journey. Not the spiritual journey you understand. No, no, the literal journey of the makeup, away from where it started. Your look will go places and that exactly where the joy happens. It’s the makeup equivalent of letting go, and we could all do with a bit of that, eh?

Now you’re a paragraph in and an undoubted gloss convert, there are some glazing conundrums to tackle; How do I pull off a glossy eye without it looking like a greasy eye? (um, I love a greasy eye! But we’ll get to that). How do I stop it smearing onto my glasses? (Stick to the lips). Where do I wear it? And that is the fun bit. We say wear it everywhere, eyes, cheeks, lips, to a date, to a rave, to a meeting to show off on Instagram. We have all your bases covered here, with a distinct focus on the colour palette that takes you over to the slickest end of the scale.

(A MODERN GLOSS NECESSITY)

The ultimate gloss how-to according to Katie Jane Hughes:

  • The biggest issue with gloss is that it congregates in creases. If you border the gloss with concealer in order to give it a barrier it will prevent it from travelling
  • A glassy red lip? Instead of applying the lipgloss at the lip line, start at the centre of the lip and work your way outwards. It’s easy to add than it is to take away, remember.
  • And just when you thought that finger in mouth to remove the excess tip was a given, we’re relaying it again, because when was the last time you saw someone with lippie on their teeth? Yesterday? Thought so.
  • The famous fish lips were created by printing our artwork onto temporary tattoo paper. Make sure there’s no moisture on the lips, otherwise a tattoo won’t adhere. Then apply gloss over the top, but only a thin layer- too much and the tattoo will move.
  • In order to make colourful gloss as wearable as possible, use powder shadow first (in a watercolour shade so it’s softer) and don’t the take colour all the way up to the brow. Then cover with a layer of clear gloss or balm.
  • Be playful with small accents of colour, you can even use lipstick or lipgloss, so long as it doesn’t have mint, menthol or cinnamon in it (eye-watering otherwise!).
