Ben Gorham and Isamaya Ffrench are two of the most sought after people in the beauty industry. Gorham for his cultish fragrances, which are as known for their sculptural design and minimal typeface as the deliciously obscure juice inside, and Ffrench for her boundary-pushing make-up, and care-free attitude.
Over the last two years, working alongside a leading cosmetics lab, the pair have been busy masterminding a make-up collection. The teaser, a futuristic image from artist Jesse Kanda, was the first clue that it wasn't just another beauty brand. “I’ve always wanted to redefine the approach to creating a makeup collection. I don’t want to tell people how to wear cosmetics, just to inspire them. Byredo can be anything—that’s what we are trying to establish,” said Ffrench of the collaboration.
Starting with six products, the collection includes lipstick and balm, and an ambiguously named Colour stick, which comes in 16 shades. Designed to be used however you please, whether as an eyeshadow or blusher, Gorham doesn't want his products to be prescriptive. There's also a liquid liner (Technical Black), and a mascara (Space Black) that wouldn't look out of a place in a modern art exhibition.
Excitingly, this is just the beginning. The duo plans to drop 5 Colour Eyeshadow Compacts in November, featuring an array of matte and metallic shades.
