The supposed end to COVID-19 restrictions is almost upon us, but we don’t fully trust the concept of Freedom Day. After all, are we really expected to just segue back into normality with the confidence and enthusiasm of someone starting a podcast given the psychic wounds that coronavirus has caused? Normality as we knew it doesn’t even exist anymore. What we will always trust, however, is lipstick. Whether we wear it to mask our newfound social anxiety or to kiss with abandon, it’s the warpaint we need in a post-pandemic world. And, since we’re craving stability, we won’t settle for anything less than long-lasting lipstick. Here are the best.

CODE8

CODE8 MATTE VELOUR LIPSTICK, £28

Given our soft spot for tracksuits of the velour variety, it’s unsurprising that we should be enamoured of a lipstick called Matte Velour by Code8. But although it makes our lips feel like they’re decked out in Juicy Couture, it actually makes them look like they’re in SKIMS. This is a long-lasting lipstick that honours the contours of lips in a way that is dynamic as opposed to flat, basically. And we feel all the sexier for it.

ARMANI

ARMANI BEAUTY LIP POWER VIVID COLOUR LONG WEAR LIPSTICK, £32.50

Whatever the three sexiest words in the English language were before Armani Lip Power launched are now irrelevant. Containing comforting oils and concentrated pigments, it offers vivid colour that stays put with grace for up to eight hours. If you’re feeling apprehensive about life returning to ‘normal’, there is no better – or healthier – defence mechanism.

NARS

NARS AUDACIOUS LIPSTICK, £26

Hypocritical at best and deadly at worst, the pandemic has understandably not been a time for applauding audacious behaviour. With a satin formula that offers bold colour in a single swipe, however, Audacious Lipstick by NARS is the good kind of audacious. The bewitching and irreverent kind that earns respect no matter the state of global affairs. The addition of four new limited edition shades – named after the most inspiring women in the founder’s life – makes things even more exciting. Here’s to misbehaving (respectfully).

DIOR

DIOR ROUGE DIOR LIMITED STAR EDITION JEWEL LIPSTICK, £35

Engraved with stars and encircled with crystals, this lipstick offers not only the glamour you’d expect from Dior but the glamour you’d expect from the post-pandemic era. That said, its brilliance isn’t limited to its packaging. The red peony extract, pomegranate flower extract and shea butter in the formula work wonders to make your lips look luscious, which is exactly what you – a star – deserve.

CHANEL

CHANEL ROUGE COCO BLOOM HYDRATING AND PLUMPING LIPSTICK, £33

A gloriously glossy – not to mention plumping and hydrating – lipstick offering intense colour that actually lasts? That would be Chanel’s ROUGE COCO BLOOM. As simple (and satisfying) as applying it is, two things actually happen when you do. Firstly, the pigments instantly set on the lips to infuse them with lasting colour. Then, the oil in the formula rises to the surface and reflects the light, creating a sculpting and plumping effect. It’s just gorgeous.
