Airbus has had an official US Patent and Trademark approved for a new super-high-speed jet, which could be capable of flying trans-Atlantic from London to New York in just one hour. That's three times faster than Concorde's three and a half hour record. With the help of the jet's incredible top speed of Mach 4.5 – a speed usually only experienced by air force pilots.

With the help of three different types of engine, the jet would take off vertically, powered by two turbojets and a rocket motor. Once at cruising altitude the turbojets retract and wing-mounted ram-jets take over to power the craft forward at super speed.

Although the patent has been file and approved, it remains to be seen if the jet can be commercially used safely and economically. The current design only permits 20 passenger seats. Stay tuned to Buro 24/7 Middle East for more on this story as it develops...
