Get ready to see a whole lot more ads on your Instagram feeds as the social media giant opens up its advertising options. The Facebook-owned platform has opened up its advertising to API (application programming interface), which allows businesses to buy, plan and track Instagram ads without the need for pre-authorisation from an Instagram sales executive.

In a move that will "almost immediately help transform it into a major mobile advertising business to rival Google and Twitter" according to Business Insider, marketers can now purchase ads on Instagram without the previous need to be vetted and go through an Instagram staff member.

After clearing out its fake accounts and illegally purchased followers last year, this new move means that Instagram followers can once again be 'bought' – as can likes. What this means for the future of the social media platform in terms of its current cool factor and popularity only time will tell...
