Former tournament champion Rafael Nadal will play against debutant Milos Raonic at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship today. Spaniard Nadal booked his ticket to the final of the annual season-opener after defeating compatriot David Ferrer in one of the longest and most highly-charged matches in the tournament's history.
"My year has started very well, it was a great match," said Nadal. "We tried our best and I think people enjoyed it, we played some great points. For me it's important to start with a victory."
Meanwhile, Canadian Raonic beat reigning French Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the semi-final. "It's going to be a tough match that's for sure; Rafa always makes it tough," said Raonic. A victory for Raonic would mean a spectacular debut at the tournament but a victory for Nadal though would make it the Spaniard's third successful Abu Dhabi championship and his first since 2011.
The Mubadala World Tennis Championship final will take place at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi on January 2. Limited tickets are still available at Ticketmaster and, all Virgin Megastore outlets across the UAE.
Update (January 3, 2016): Rafael Nadal won the Mubadala World Tennis Championship for the third time after defeating Milos Raonic in the final 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
