Have you ever wandered what a wedding portrait by Van Gogh, a holiday snap by Monet or a party pic by Banksy might look like in your collection? A new algorithm, developed in Germany, will allow you to take any photograph and transform that image into the style of any artist, from the iconic style of any of the masters to, a new or unknown artist.
Here comes the science – the process uses something called a convolutional neural network, which was made to mimic the styles of Van Gogh, Picasso, and Edvard Munch by filtering the style of the original art through several computational units before resulting in a representation that agrees with the source image. The process has been refined to balance the source and the influence perfectly so both likeness are properly portrayed. The transformation takes one hour but this will soon be cut down to a much fast process. Well you know what they say – imitation is the highest form of flattery.
