Power apparently grows on trees in Dubai. The ever forward-planning city has installed a series of solar panel powered palm tree-inspired WiFi stations, dubbed – Smart Palms. Proving once again that technological ingenuity can be integrated to make a smarter running city.

With two initial locations in Umm Suqeim Beach and Za'abeel Park, the Smart Palms provide free wireless Internet access as well as providing information on the weather, local attractions and charging capabilities for mobile devices.

The initiative is part of the UAE Cabinet Year of Innovation project and aims to see 103 Smart Palms 'planted' in the near future. The project is a joint effort by Dubai Municipality, Smart Palm creators D Idea Media, Du, Sun Tab Solar Energy and Promo Tech Gulf Industry. We would be very happy sitting under the shade of these trees...
