As the timepiece extends its purpose from a mere time-keeping tool to a fashion accessory, many luxury watchmakers are shifting focus too. However, as one of the pioneers of haute horological jewellery, Piaget has continued to set the benchmark. A mere look at their SIHH 2016 launches proves that they are still the go-to brand as Buro 24/7 takes a closer look at their latest luxe line-up.
The Altiplano Collection
Piaget is the undoubted king of ultra-thin timepieces. Its 900P is the thinnest in its class at a mere 3.65mm. At about 2mm thicker, the 900D is also a record-breaker, earning the title of the world's slimmest haute jewellery watch. The extra 2mm from its predecessor is all diamonds though — 304 of them.
Piaget's Altiplano collection extends even further this year with the introduction of three new models that feature the maison's signature emblem, the rose. New techniques have been used to create these new models: marquetry and gold engraving. Taking at least 25 hours for these unique dials to be created, the gold engraving option is polished further with diamond powder and is limited to only eight pieces. The marquetry technique however serves up a rose motif made from wood or mother-of-pearl and each model is limited to just 18 pieces. Alligator leather straps with either white or pink gold buckles complement these rare rose edition Altiplano models.
The Limelight Collection
One of the showstoppers at SIHH 2016 was the Limelight Stella, Piaget's first complication watch dedicated to women. With a moonphase that requires a manual adjustment only once every 122 years and 14 brilliant-cut diamonds, the Limelight Stella is the ultimate in femininity with an equal measure of technical stardust sprinkled on top.
While the Stella was made available in December 2015, the new lady in the collection, the Limelight Gala, announced its arrival at SIHH with a design that is instantly recognisable. Identifiable by its round case and uniquely contemporary lugs, the Gala is also bedecked with diamonds that surround the whole face, resulting in a timepiece that is all statement.
Emperador Coussin XL 700P
The watch to mark the the 40th anniversary of the brand's inhouse quartz calibre 7P, the Emperador Coussin XL 700P is a hybrid timepiece that reveals the intricate and complex movements that run inside, from the front! Limited to only 118 pieces, the new timepiece displays the hybrid movement with the time-keeping aspect tucked into a bottom corner. Set in a white gold case, the Emperador Coussin XL 700P is made complete by the black alligator strap.
