"I have beautiful girls," Diane von Furstenberg said of her models backstage before her Spring/Summer 16 presentation at New York Fashion Week last night. "I tell each one of them, 'when you walk, I just want you to think of the woman you want to be, and be that.'" And out streamed a flow of goddess-like women in von Furstenberg's varied and vibrant lineup of jumpsuits, dresses and separates.
Aside from the 1970's hair and beauty styling, (which sat well with her starting point) her inspiration was evident in abundance – Fortuna – the Greco-Roman goddess of fortune. This collection is about making your own fortune and masting your own fate: "Basically, it's all about individuality," von Furstenberg repeated. "Whatever little role I have, it's to tell every woman to be the woman she wants to be."
The Grecian influence came through more literally in some diaphanous maxi dresses in white, adorned with gold leaf butterly print, while elsewhere the message was delivered with a bold patterned colour, on silk scarf style jumpsuits, belted pant-suits or a vibrant pink and orange one-shoulder dress. Surely there is something in this collection for every individual penchant. Any woman could channel her inner Fortuna from this lineup.
