Alexander Wang is officially moving on from Balenciaga. The Spring/Summer 16 collection, set to be shown in Paris this September, will be Wang's farewell presentation for the French fashion house.

Rumours surfaced earlier this month of a possible split, as Balenciaga's parent company, Kering, released a statement saying: "There are discussions between the designer and Balenciaga regarding the renewal of the contract."

Wang's term at the creative helm of the house has been relatively short, compared to that of his predecessor, Nicholas Ghesquiere, who enjoyed 15 years in the creative director chair.

It is not yet known exactly what lead to the decision not to renew the contract, or which party lead the decision. And more crucially, it is not known who will take up the plum role as creative head to succeed Wang. It is thought that a lesser-known designer with the right talent, would be considered. UPDATE: Kering group and Alexander Wang have released a joint statement confirming the end of Wang’s tenure at Balenciaga: 

“Balenciaga and Alexander Wang today announce their joint decision not to renew their contract beyond its initial term,” the French fashion house said in a statement. “Since 2012, Alexander Wang has stood at the creative helm of the maison and has been instrumental in the pursuit of its development. With his proven talent and his irreverent, modern vision of design, Alexander Wang has brought a new impetus to the brand,” the statement continued. “Balenciaga and Kering would like to thank Alexander Wang for his accomplishments and wish him the very best with his eponymous brand as well as all his future endeavours,” it added.

Alexander Wang added: “It’s been an incredible experience to work with a couture house in Paris. I am honoured to have had the opportunity to work for this historical maison. I would like to thank the brilliant team at Balenciaga for their collaboration and for what we have accomplished together, and I am looking forward to taking my own brand to its next level of growth,” he said.
