hat a year for fashion! In 2015 we've watched Alber Elbaz leave Lanvin, Raf Simons resign from Dior, Balmaination take over the world and the Yeezy win shoe of the year. This year has seen some the fashion world's biggest industry changes and now it's time to sit back and relax with Buro 24/7 Middle East as we reflect on the 15 major fashion moments...
1. Alber Elbaz leaves Lanvin
After 14 years at the helm of one of Paris' most influential design houses, Alber Elbaz bowed out at Lanvin in October. Shock waves were sent through the industry as the designer's immediate departure left his design team, who were only notified the morning of, with speculation of who was taking over. The company released a final statement saying: "Today the House of Lanvin has ended its collaboration with Alber Elbaz. We would like to thank him for the chapter he has written in the House's 125 year history." No replacement has been announced.
2. Raf Simons resigns from Dior
In mid October, after an iconic Paris Fashion Week show Raf Simons announced his official departure from Christian Dior. After three-and-a-half years at the helm, the designer parted ways with the French fashion house citing personal reasons. With still no replacement taking over creative direction it has recently been confirmed that the Dior in-house atelier will be designing the next two collections for 2016.
3. Jonathan Saunders shuts down
Jonathan Saunders announced his decision to leave behind his captivating collections in a shock decision to exit his namesake brand this December. The Scottish-born luxury fashion designer began his brand ten years ago, and has since made the decision to step down as Creative Director closing the doors on Jonathan Saunders, the label.
4. Alessandro Michele takes over Gucci
Italian luxury label, Gucci appointed Alessandro Michele as its new Creative Director back in early January. The 42-year-old had been with the brand since 2002 and replaced Frida Giannini, who parted ways with Gucci in 2014. Michele's fresh vision and comittment to the brand scored him the prestigious International Designer Award at the British Fashion Awards this November.
5. Balmaination takes over the world, literally!
The biggest high-end and high-street collaboration in H&M's history was indeed its one with French fashion house, Balmain. Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing re-structured his signature glamourous style into wearbale affordable pieces, which were modelled by this years most famous newcomers: Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. The collaboration saw fans camp on the streets days before its release, which sold out in a matter of hours.
6. Burberry becomes one
British brand, Burberry went back to basics this year by merging its three lines into one. The shock announcement made by Burberry Group PLC confirmed that by the end of 2016 the British brand will no longer produce Prorsum, London and Brit but will consolidate all three into one brand: Burberry.
7. Zoolander took over the Valentino runway
Italian label Valentino showcased a beautiful collection at Paris Fashion Week back in March with the American actors, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson strutting their stuff in a shock Zoolander 2 movie announcement.
8. Givenchy's September 11 New York show
On September 11 Givenchy took to the streets of New York City's Pier 26 to reveal is Spring Summer '16 collection. Under the creative direction of Riccardo Tisci, the label made history with its first ever fashion show for the public, which was flown from France to America. The brand gave away 820 tickets to "real people" as well as a star-studded front row which included Kim, Kanye and Julia Roberts. Set with a New York City backdrop and an industrial inspired production, Tisci expressed: "America was the first country to really believe in me. It's a way of saying thank you to America for what it's given to me."
9. Kristen Stewart plays Coco Chanel
On Decemeber 1, Karl Lagerfeld debuted his latest film Once and Forever at Chanel's Paris meets Rome Metier D'Art fashion show. Twilight actress, Kristen Stewart was cast as the star of the short film, in which she plays the role of Coco Chanel or rather an actress prepping for the role of Coco Chanel. The film shows the actress as we've never see before; singing, dancing and talking French.
10. The Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience 2015
It's one of Dubai's most prestigious events on the fashion calendar and this year we saw supermodels Eva Herzigova, Mariacarla Boscono, Magosia Bela, Bianca Brandolini, Eugenie Niarchos and Carmen Kass along with Franca Sozzani, Editor in Chief of Vogue Italy grace The Dubai Mall for the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience, which gives emerging designers from around the world a chance to present their collections.
11. Zuhair Murad designs Sophia Vergara's wedding dress
Middle Eastern designer, Zuhair Murad sent the wedding world into couture craziness with Sofia Vergara's custom-made wedding dress. The actress who married Joe Manganiello in November opted for a mermaid-cut dress that was embellished with 350 crystals, pearls and sequins and required over 1,657 hours of handiwork. Baroque motifs were elgantly embroidered, which was inspired by the Roman church, Frescos. The dress also featured a striking detachable train.
12. Kanye's Yeezy Boost wins Shoe of the Year
It was confirmed this December that the Yeezy Boost 350 was the official shoe of 2015. Kanye West's trend triumph soared through the shoe market, which crashed the internet and saw people queue for hours just to get their hands on a pair. The Footwear News Achievement Awards honoured Kanye West with the prestigious award, in which he thanked some of the industries most talented including Guiseppe Zanotti and Louis Vuitton.
13. Tryano opens in Abu Dhabi
Following the success of The Dubai Mall's Level Shoe District, the UAE's capital, Abu Dhabi was the chosen city for Tryano — the region's first three-storey luxury shopping experience. The luxurious store is host to 250 of the world's and region's most luxurious brands. Tryano is also tipped to remain the leading luxury location for the finest bags and beauty lines for women and men and there's also an entire floor dedicated to luxury designer clothes for children.
14. Joan Didion for Celine Spring/Summer '16 campaign
When 80-year-old literary legend Joan Didion was announced as the new face of Celine's Spring/Summer '15 advertising campaign, the entire fashion world stopped and gasped with excitement. Posed behind dark oversized glasses, a black shirt and a gold pendant sat Joan, which definitely won the advertising campaign of the year award!
15. Snapchat became the go-to fashion sneak peek app
From Burberry and Mario Testino's campaign sneak peeks to Gucci's behind the scenes Pre-Fall '16 fifteen second video. Snapchat definitely set itself up as fashion's go-to sneak peek digital app. This year we saw everyone from Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner take over the snapchat world with their must-watch accounts, giving people a glimpse into the world of fashion, celebrity and daily doing's.
