Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has just launched an annual scholarship initiative for women in Lebanon who are seeking to gain an international education.
A partnership with Armenian global intitiative 100 Lives, the officially named Amal Clooney Scholarship will send one female student from Lebanon to WC Dilijan College, a co-ed boarding school in Dilijan, Armenia, to enrol in a two-year international baccalaureate program. Winners will be chosen based on academic performance and a "demonstrable interest in the promotion of human rights and international issues".
"This scholarship will give young women from Lebanon the opportunity of a lifetime," said the Lebanese-born Clooney. "Cross-cultural learning and studying abroad can be transformative."
The scholarship has already seen its first recipient, Pamela Tebchrany, a Lebanese student who graduated top of her class and will now go on to pursue studies in human rights and women's equality.
