The atmosphere was fierce as the curtain goes up on one of the most anticipated films of the year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which held its world premiere in Los Angeles last night, 10 years after the last Star Wars film.
Set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, the latest instalment sees new protagonists played by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Lupita Nyong'o, while the original Star Wars cast including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher also make a return to the franchise.
To portray a new planet in the series, Jakku, the film went on location to Abu Dhabi's Liwa desert, with an interactive video released on the movie's official Facebook page showing more of the desert's importance within the movie.
Apart from cast and crew, other celebrities also turned up for the red carpet event: Sofia Vergara, Jaime King, Elizabeth Banks and Ana de la Reguera. Fans around the world were also invited to watch a live streaming of the event through the film's official website.
The Middle East premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be held at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi on December 16 and the film hits mainstream theatres December 17.
