Johnny Depp will play an animated version of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle's super sleuth, albeit with a twist. In the follow-up to the successful Gnomeo & Juliet, Depp will lend his voice to leading character Sherlock Gnomes. The 52-year-old actor has previously been involved in animated movies, most notably Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.
Apart from Depp, Emily Blunt and James McAvoy are set to reprise their roles as the terracotta clay lovers from the first movie but no confirmed reports if Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Matt Lucas and Stephen Merchant will return as well.
The film will be directed by John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) and the team of original writers will be working on this project as well. Although Elton John and David Furnish will produce the movie, it's unclear if John will take ownership of the soundtrack as with the previous film.
Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes is scheduled for release in January 2018.
