Azzedine Alaïa’s first ever fragrance is now available at select Alaïa boutiques, Galeries Lafayette’s Paris flagship and Harrods in the U.K, but what does it smell like?...
"Mr. Alaïa explained he was looking for something like water," said Alaïa’s fragrance licensee Beauté Prestige International spokesperson Nathalie Helloin-Kamel. Adding that he wanted a scent that was close to the sensation of fresh water being splashed on to a hot chalk wall – and that the contrasting hot-cold impression was key.
The Alaïa fragrance features airy top notes such as pink pepper, middle notes of freesia and peony and base notes of suede and musk.
"The idea for Mr. Alaïa was to work with people around him and to share everything with everyone," continued Helloin-Kamel to WWD. "He could ask a question about the bottle to the nose, and a question about the fragrance to the bottle designer. He wanted everyone to feel their part of the project. He made the final decision while mixing [in] all the information around him."
“Creating a perfume is to confide in a woman, to steal her thoughts of tomorrow and run away with her before she ever looks back. … Creating a perfume is also knowing that, at that precise instant, the words I use to recount my secret already no longer belong to me. … My perfume is not reasonable — it makes time lie. I dreamed of it like an archaeologist dreams of sculptures from antiquity lying at the bottom of the sea for millennia, sculptures of perfect bodies, matched only by the women of today — an ideal and timeless beauty.” – Azzedine Alaïa
She added that this approach of working was useful for all. For example when Firemenich perfumer Marie Salamagne was creating the transparent top notes, she was directly inspired by discussions about the bottle’s transparency, which was created with Martin Szekely and takes its cues from Alaïa fashion, in particular the signature laser-cut pattern first used in the Nineties. While the decorative cap is inspired by a spool of golden thread.
The Alaïa Paris perfume will also be available in the U.S exclusively at Saks from August 14 and Buro 24/7 Middle East will keep you posted on its arrival to the Middle East...
